Listening issues - ogg vorbistop...
smilie for :2:What's the deal with ogg ?

Ogg Vorbis is a better sounding alternative to mp3.

On a PC you will need Winamp 5 (full version) or VUplayer (only 1.8MB) to hear us.
There is also a DirectShow plugin (comaptible with Windows Media Player amongst others) avalilable, although with slightly worse sound quality.

On a MAC we recommend the free VideoLAN (OSX only), which not only streams Ogg Vorbis, but is also said to beat Quicktime at playing movies.
OS9 users can use the (now) free Audion 3 Media Player

Please let us know if you encounter any problems and we will try to help.

smilie for :2:How do I listen to live shows in ogg format ?

Make sure you have an ogg vorbis compatible media player and click on the ogg radio.

If you hear a welcome message, your ogg plugin is working correctly.

If you only hear a bunch of jingles, there is either no broadcast at the moment, or we are having technical difficulties.
In the latter case, try and reconnect after a few minutes.

smilie for :!:I click the ogg button, and nothing happens...

Make sure that your firewall allows the player to access the internet.

If you can't even hear our 'welcome' jingle, you either haven't got a media player capable of ogg vorbis playback (get one here), or your media player has problems with our playlist file.

In the latter case, please let us know and we will try and correct the problem as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can try opening the live stream url in your media Player by copying and pasting the following link:

http://195.10.228.4:8000/209radio.ogg

(In Winamp, press CTRL+L to open a url, followed by CTRL+V to paste the above url)

smilie for :2:I have a modem / dial-up connection. Can I still listen ?

Yes, but only through our modem-friendly mp3 stream (56k or higher only, sorry smilie for :)).
Our high-quality ogg stream has a bitrate of 80kbps (kilobits per second) and is therefore unsuitable for modem users.

smilie for :2:How do I listen to live shows in mp3 format ?

You need a streaming enabled mp3 player.

On a PC there are:
Winamp (recommended), VUplayer (only 1.8MB), Windows Media Player, Real Player and VideoLAN.

On a MAC iTunes should do just fine, as well as VideoLAN and Audion 3.
Please let us know if you're having problems.

If you have a firewall, make sure you allow the mp3 player access to the net.

smilie for :!:I click the mp3 button, and nothing happens...

Either there is no show broadcasting at the moment, or your media player (get one here) has problems with our playlist file.

To check if there is a show currently playing, click the schedule button above.
If you have a problem with our playlist file, please let us know and we will try and correct the problem as soon as possible.

smilie for :2:Why do some shows have "advisory" next to them?

209radio does not knowingly broadcast music or speech which has content concerned with the condonement or promotion of; racism, hatred, sexual or gender discrimination, overly explicit swearing, drug abuse etc

If you do find material such as this which has slipped us by please do contact us and let us know: getinvolved[at]209radio[dot]co[dot]uk

However, the freedom of speech and cultural differences will always be championed by 209radio and please bear in mind that a lot of 20th Century and contemporary music which has now been accepted by the mainstream, used in adverts or even political campaigning can actually be concerned with the more controversial themes of life....

Programmes which are likely to contain adult content are flagged as advisory.

Genre such as hip hop are often concerned with the culture and violence experienced by disaffected youth across the world and use language accordingly.

We encourage our DJs to use radio edits if possible.
These shows also go out live in the evening or late at night.

smilie for :virus:What's the deal with that "Winamp vulnerability" ?

A newly discovered security flaw in Winamp could allow attackers the execution of arbitrary code when visiting specially crafted web pages. EDIT: Since then there have been some more...

Please update your version of Winamp to 5.32 or higher as soon as possible to stay protected.

You can either use the Add/Remove Pograms Control panel to remove your old version, or you can simply install over it.

smilie for :2:When I try to listen live, I get one message and nothing else?

When you click the listen button on the front page to hear the live stream, we send your media player a list of files.

These are welcome messages and a link to the live stream.

You may not have your playlist window open so you may not see them, you also may not have your player set to play the next link automatically when the first one finishes.

Please refer to your player's instructions.

smilie for :!:I have trouble listening

To listen to our streams, you need a media player capable of handling streaming audio,
such as Winamp for PC and VideoLAN on the Mac.

Do you have trouble listening to...

Listening issues - archivetop...
smilie for :2:How do I listen to archived shows ?

Click the archive button above.

Each show gets archived soon after it has been broadcast live, usually within a day.

You can listen to the archive by clicking on the ogg or mp3 buttons next to each show.

You have the coice of listening to our modem-friendly mp3 stream (56k or higher only, sorry smilie for :)), or our high-quality ogg stream (broadband-only)

smilie for :!:I can't listen to the archive in ogg format

Make sure you have an ogg vorbis compatible media player, and that your firewall allows the player to access the internet.

If you can hear the welcome message, your player is ready to go.

If you have problems with the playlist file, or if there is a dead link, please let us know and we will try and correct the problem as soon as possible.

smilie for :2:When do shows appear in the archive ?

The following day with a bit of luck smilie for :)

Our programmes are automatically recorded as they go out live and processed for website publication overnight.

This is an entirely automated process and as such, can go wrong from time to time.

smilie for :2: Why is this radio station called 209radio?

If you have been trying to tune into 209 FM, then please waste your effort no longer!
There is no 209 MHz on the FM dial: you can find us on 105 FM
So why 209?
Well, we were born in a terraced house in the north of Cambridge in March 2003; the number of that house is 209...
209radio beamed out over the web from that house for 3 years until we moved into Citylife House and so the name has well and truly stuck.
Our members recently took a vote on whether we should change; we voted to keep it, even on FM!
If you have read this, please remember to spread the word as to where the name comes from; we do recognise that it causes confusion for some but we feel it is an expression of our distinctive approach to radio!

Podcasttop...
smilie for :2: What is a Podcast ?

"Podcasting [...] is a method of publishing files to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new files automatically by subscription, usually at no cost. It first became popular in late 2004, used largely for audio files." (Wikipedia)

209 offers this new service as an alternative way of getting notified about newly archived shows.

This is how to subscribe to a stream at 209radio:

1) Download Juice (formerly known as iPodder).
2) Browse to the page on 209radio you'd like to stay informed about, and find this symbol: an image .
3) Right-click it and choose "Copy Shortcut / Copy Link Location" (depending on your browser/OS)
4) Open Juice (iPodder), click the (+) symbol (add feed), and paste the podcast url into it.
5) Tick the box next to the show you want to download.

Podcasting is a very new technology, so there's bound to be lots of bugs.
Please let us know if you encounter any.

smilie for :2: How can I customize a Podcast ?

By default, http://podcast.209radio.co.uk displays all available archived shows in mp3 format.

Do you want to...

smilie for :2: How can I get the podcast of a specific show ?

smilie for :2: Can I combine the podcast attributes ?

You can refine the results further by combining the above podcast attributes, using an ampersand (&) to separate query terms
Example:

smilie for :2: Is there an ogg version of the podcast ?

Yes there is.
it works exactly like the mp3 version (except it sounds better smilie for :)), and can be found here:
http://oggcast.209radio.co.uk

NOTE: This only works with ogg vorbis compatible media players / podcast clients, such as iRiver, Winamp (full), iPodder)
